The December Chapter Meeting will be held on  Wednesday, December 11 at 5:30 PM at Syberg’s Dorsett (2430 Old Dorsett Road, Maryland Heights, MO). Ben Luetkemeyer of Terracon will speak on “Geophysical Applications in Engineering Practice.” See below for a preview of the presentation. Cost will be $30 for members, $40 for non-members, and $10 for students and those between jobs. Please RSVP above by Tuesday, December 10, 2019.

Geophysical Applications In Engineering Practice: The planning, design, and construction of infrastructure and facilities requires some type of modification to the ground within their physical footprint. These modifications may include the installation of shallow or deep foundations, excavations requiring cut and fill, soil/rock anchors, horizontal and direction drilling, etc. These projects require some knowledge of the subsurface conditions. Parameters of interest can include depth, thickness and lateral extent of soil and bedrock layers, the variability and physical properties of the layers, and the locations of buried objects. Knowing these parameters prior to construction can results in significant cost savings to a project. Geophysics methods are a relatively non-invasive means to obtain spatially continuous measurements of subsurface properties. The data obtained can then be used to interpolate subsurface properties between boreholes and excavations. The purpose of this presentation is to introduce several engineering geophysical methods and applications using real examples.

If you’d like to present a geoscience-related topic to our chapter, contact our Vice Chair  Matt Masterson or Chair Stephanie Kline-Tissi to schedule a presentation date!
